I pin back my sweaty hair
Guthrie tells me we're nearly there
I see him smile and shade his face
As we book it down the rows of an 800MW solar array
Guthrie slides the hangar door
I've only seen him like this once before
We suit up and buckle in
Flip a switch and a song begins
Power hums and metal grinds
Guthrie whistles through his broken tooth, "let's fly"

“sun’s getting hot”
i whisper to the paddies as i wander off
wind’s been gone for weeks
and the water wheel’s clogged and i need to sleep
I kick the turbine loose
sami brought her fiddle and she plays a few
light kicks off the bow
while she accompanies a circuit-bent radio
the afternoon’s the only time i’m tired anymore
the batteries are humming and the cat’s at the door
guthrie you told me this one before
“this thing’s a fucking mess,”
sami’s kicking at my exosuit while I get dressed
“You’re really one to talk, sam”
and I gesture with my elbow her intake fan
the afternoon’s the only time i’m tired anymore
the water wheel is spinning and the cat’s at the door
guthrie you’ve told me this one before
“Hey sami, open up!”
guthrie yells at us from some kind of flying cargo truck
we hide it in the shop
and i burn my wrist on the engine block

sami and me
walked the whole way to town
for twenty yards of wire and some water
I braid the cable
we sit on the curb
sam says it's going to get hotter
her old apartment's
up there by the cliffs
i say "hey sam
do you miss this?"
sami and me
walk along the canal
she says "coming here makes me feel older"
i buy us some plums
and a can of black paint
sam puts the wire on her shoulders
we take the train back out to the farm
sam draws a plum on my forearm
guthrie waves at us
from way up above
I smile and shout "did you miss us?"
guthrie looks wild
says "wheels up in five
paul's still alive"

wings got frozen open years ago
i got icy too
started sleeping through the sky
i stopped asking questions, soldiered on
inverse puppetry
i am the small one, mimic me
sunlight keeps me airborne but not warm
night time keeps me sane
that's when i open my eyes, not too clear
there's a pit so heavy in my chest
if i look head on
what will vanish? so i side-eye
can i keep on circling, squinting out?
never write it down
always curve away, never land

in the corner of the hangar
we trade anklepads and cigarettes and schemes
we keep our noses clean
six thirty at the kitchen
six fifty five zipped up and checking in
another endless day begins
watch the sunrise from the runway
it shouldn't get me down
but I hate this town
I hate this town
but I hate this town
I hate this town
this machine was built to kill me
my body is the dream of profiteers
can you feel the gears?
not kill but something like it
my undoing is a matter of course
they shoot the rider with the horse
listen to the engine whine
we all die on company time
we all die on company time
we all die on company time
* * *
watch the sunrise from the runway
it shouldn't get me down
but I hate this town
I hate this town
I hate this town
I hate this town

you said now watch me spin
i said how?
you said with your eyes, jackass
you asked how high to go
i said clouds
you smiled with the corners of your mouth
you spun around me, pinwheel, little ghost, windmill
you said watch the thrust
i said okay
we dust the crops and get paid
you spin around me, pinwheel, little ghost, windmill
